But internally, the alliance is complex, forged in the fires of shared oppression, strained by different needs, and ultimately inseparable. Understanding this dynamic is essential to understanding modern queer history.
Historically, some in the gay community viewed trans women as "men who took it too far." Meanwhile, some trans women view drag as a caricature of womanhood that can feel dysphoric. Yet, many trans people got their start in drag (including icons like Laverne Cox and Monica Beverly Hillz, who famously came out as trans on Drag Race ).
