Her father, Shahidullah Kaiser, was a renowned journalist and novelist who was abducted by the Pakistan Army and its collaborators in December 1971 during the final stages of the Liberation War and was never seen again. Her mother, Panna Kaiser, was a writer and a former Awami League member of parliament. Her maternal uncle is former President A. Q. M. Badruddoza Chowdhury.
