When a laser scanner, like those used in Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), hits a pane of glass, most of its laser beam passes right through. The scanner captures the objects behind the glass instead of the glass itself, resulting in — unwanted holes in the 3D point cloud where the glass should be. Research shows that ordinary float glass can have data voids covering over 93% of its surface in a scan. This creates an incomplete, ghost-like digital model that is useless for accurate documentation. Furthermore, glass can create a 'hotspot effect', a bright, blown-out area in the scan data within 2 to 5 degrees of the angle of reflection, and can produce false data points as the beam reflects off surrounding surfaces. glass sky scan

The digitization process is highly sophisticated. Special scanners are used to create high-resolution digital images of the glass plates. The DASCH project (Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard) has been particularly critical, having scanned over 429,000 direct images from the collection for its final data release in 2024.
