The first major production was the epic historical drama , a co-production with the Soviet Union's Mosfilm. The film was a significant achievement, winning a prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1954 and putting Albanian cinema on the world map for the first time. Following this, the first fully Albanian-produced feature films arrived: the short film "Fëmijët e saj" (Her Children) in 1957, directed by Hysen Hakani, and the first full-length feature, "Tana" (1958) , directed by Kristaq Dhamo. During the long, isolated regime of Enver Hoxha, cinema was a crucial tool for communist propaganda, glorifying the partisan struggle, the virtues of socialism, and the leadership of the Party. However, growing international isolation in the 1970s and 80s—stemming from Albania's break with both the Soviet Union and China—had an unexpected side effect. By 1990, Albania had over 450 cinemas, a remarkable number for its small population, though much of the equipment was obsolete. The legacy of this era includes over 270 feature films, 700 documentaries, and 150 animated films produced at Kinostudio. This prolific period, while ideologically driven, created a foundation of technical expertise and a vast cinematic archive that is now recognized as a key part of European film heritage; indeed, the Kinostudio "Shqipëria e Re" building has been included in the list of Treasures of European Film Culture . shqip kinema
